The dark-coated rabbit ran trough the rain. It was like something was chasing him, even though there was nothing behind him. But he was indeed running away. Away from his past.
"He is gone..." the dark rabbit huffed. "He is dead... the black rabbit took him... I'm free..."
This dark-coated rabbit was called Vervain. He was commonly known as a traitor, bully, and all in all that kind of a rabbit you don't want to get around with. But truly, all the bad things he had done were out of fear or hate. He was captain of "the black rabbit's cousin" Woundwort, and that was enough reason for everyone to hate him.
"I must run... fast... away from Efrafa... Dark heaven... Watership down... everyone..."
Vervain knew that the Watership down rabbits didn't want him. He had fought against them, twice. Both out of fear and hate, but still. Heck, some of the High hill rabbits had flat out said that they would never be able to forgive the dark rabbit for what he had done.
And Vervain understood. He would never be able to forgive himself either.
"Farther away from the hills... the better... away from Hazel... Fiver... Big Wig... that bloody gull..."
Vervain had been running for days. He had only stopped for short while to eat, drink and take a nap. He started to be quite tired, but the hope for free life, away from war and fear, made him go on. Maybe he would be able to find a warren that wanted to take him in. Maybe he would make some friends. Maybe even have a family. The hope to achieve all this made him run faster and farther.
"No more Campion... No more Cowslip... No more Woundwort... I must be free... like Frith told me... I must be... free... I mu-WAAAH!"
Vervain had not noticed the slope next to him, and one unfortunate step sent him plummeting down the bank. As the black-coated rabbit hit the ground, his eyes went dark.
The rain had stopped the moment he woke up. His whole body was aching. The fall had not been too big, but the stones on the way down had not made it a pleasant fall either way. Vervain's eyes were fuzzy. He thought that now that he was laying on the ground anyway, he might as well sleep for some time. Before he closed his eyes, he saw something golden brown come closer to him. With his fuzzy eyes, he could not tell it it was a rabit or an elil. Fankly, it really didn't matter anymore. The last thing Vervain heard before he fell asleep was the most beautiful voice he had even heard calling him:
"Hey... Hey! Are you okay?"
